What to Expect

A Clear Guide to Your Surgical Experience

Use this guide to navigate each step of your surgical experience. Our goal is to ensure you feel confident going into your procedure and comfortable during recovery.

Before Surgery

  • Schedule a visit with your primary care provider (PCP) within 60 days before surgery for medical clearance.
  • Expect a call from the surgery center about one week before your procedure to review instructions and restrictions.
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery.

Day of Surgery

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive, closed-toe shoes.
  • Do not wear makeup. Remove all eyeliner and mascara completely.
  • Leave valuables at home.
  • Bring your completed Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation Form.
  • Bring sunglasses for after your procedure.
  • Drivers should plan for a 1.5–3 hour total visit.

During Surgery

  • You will meet the anesthesia team to review your health history and start an IV.
  • You will receive medication to help you relax. You will be awake but comfortable (conscious sedation).

After Surgery

  • If your eyes are dilated, blurry vision may last 2–3 days.
  • You may leave with no covering, or with a gauze patch and clear shield, depending on your procedure.
  • After recovery, you will go home with your driver.
  • Plan to rest, eat a light meal, and take it easy for the remainder of the day.
  • Mild burning, itching, or scratchiness is common. Preservative-free artificial tears or acetaminophen (Tylenol) may help.
